Dr. Changwon Son, an assistant professor in the Department of Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering at the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering at Texas Tech University, has received a $49,989 grant from the National Safety Council to address musculoskeletal disorders linked to overhead work in the manufacturing industry.
The funding comes from the council’s Musculoskeletal Disorders Research to Solutions (R2S) program. The project will focus on developing and testing a 3D-printed head and neck support device designed for workers performing prolonged overhead tasks, known as a known risk factor for musculoskeletal injuries. Corey Shultz and Changwon Son published a journal paper on multiple simultaneous disasters (Msd)10/8/2025
A journal article regarding smart technologies and AI solutions for 'all-hazards responders' was published in Applied Ergonomics. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.apergo.2025.104488 This paper was authored by Dr. Junho Park, an assistant professor at University of Calgary, collaborators in Santa Clara Fire Department, and Dr. Changwon Son.
Dr. Son received 2023-2024 George T. and Gladys Abell-Hanger Faculty Award from Whitacre College of Engineering (WCOE) at Texas Tech University for this excellence in teaching and mentoring. (Dean Roland Faller on the right side in the photo).
Dr. Jen Henderson from Texas Tech Geosciences visited the SHARE Lab. Dr. Henderson is an expert geographer who studies risks, equity, and safety issues during various kinds of disasters. She usually works with decision-makers and essential workers such as weather broadcasters. During her visit, she tried a VR-based firefighting simulator and observed simulated medical emergencies using manikins.
Dr. Changwon Son has been accepted to be a Member of Texas Tech STEM CORE. STEM CORE is a nationally-recognized resource that performs and facilitates collaborative and interdisciplinary activities in STEM education, outreach, and research.
